There are plenty of New Yorkers that can drink a couple of beers in one night’s time; however, no one beats the Czech! Greatly surpassing Ireland (No 2) and Germany (No 3), Czech Republic is No 1 in per-capita beer consumption of some 156 litres. This leaves no doubt as to why Czech beer is world famous and why Prague is beer drinkers’ paradise.
While Budweis, Plzeň and Prague are the most famous brewing cities in Bohemia, the best known Czech beers are: the original Pils beer, Pilsner Urquell, followed by Staropramen and Gambrinus. The most widely exported Czech beer is Budvar (Budweiser in German). Note that the Czech Budvar and the American Bud are two different beers altogether.
Apart from the unbelievable city that Prague is, much of the tourism practiced in Czech Republic is the beer-tourism! The reasons are simple: the beer is plenty, it tastes terrific and it’s cheap. Half a liter generally costs approximately 20 CZK, which is a little less than a dollar. What more can you wish for?
The best advice anyone can give you is that while in Prague, enjoy the local beer and the excellent lagers. One of the best places to do that is at The Pub. The Pub is truly a one of a kind bar, which provides an unparalleled drinking experience: beer contest amongst tables, while enjoying self-service unpasteurized Pilsner beer. Each table has its own beer tap, secured within a system that keeps track of how many beers each person is drinking. The goal is to see how you and your friends are doing, compared to other tables in the pub. The stats are broadcast on a huge screen for everyone to acknowledge the score. The greatest thing about it – besides the beer – is the lively atmosphere that the competition brings upon. Careful with the self-service feature though, you still need to get to your hotel for the night!
It is important to know that even though The Pub has three locations throughout Prague, reservations are needed, for they are all constantly full. You can also buy food; the pork knee/knuckle is by far the best! The Pub is suitable for both smokers and non-smokers.
