I have never felt all alone, roaming through a city, until yesterday; I went for a day-trip to Montreux, in the canton of Vaud. Montreux is a picturesque city of some 23,000 nestled on the shores of the Lake Geneva. Situated between the Swiss and the French Alps, it is part of what is called the “Swiss Riviera,” an area known for its breathtaking natural beauty.
I knew the city’s population was small, but for some reason, yesterday it welcomed me into an idyllic Swiss ghost town, where I spent a lovely day of discovery and much needed introspection.
The fog was thick, and the snow was falling. But in a strange way, it was perfect. No one to bother me, to push me aside, to disturb the silence; just me, all alone, in colorful Montreux.
I started my tour on the promenade of Lake Geneva, followed by entering the city streets, ending with getting lost exploring the cobblestone narrow streets going up the hill. As I ascended, and the fog got even thicker, I came up to this view. Grey but spectacular!
What I found to be most appealing to this small town were its colorful houses, its bright Swiss windows and yet, its peaceful environment.
Walking through the intricate streets of the Swiss town, I started to confirm I truly was alone. Where had everyone disappeared? I only saw one sign indicating some may be away.
What was most unexpected was discovering a Freddy Mercury statue that overlooks Lake Geneva; I would have never guessed Queen’s lead vocalist had written and recorded his last songs at Mountain Studios.
