With the recent spring weather we’ve been enjoying in New York, I just had to escape the concrete jungle for some fresh air, rich greenery and beautiful flowers. I had never been to the NY Botanical Garden, and so I hopped on Metro-North and within 20 minutes I was there.
As soon as I arrived, it was evident this is one of the best outdoor activities to be enjoyed in New York City. Not only is it close to the city, but easily available for all.
The main attraction this season is the Orchid Show, taking place between March 2nd – April 22nd and curated by Francesca Coelho. The pavilion hosts a lush tropical oasis where colorful, flagrant orchids emerge at every turn – hanging from trees, growing on rocks, clinging to branches, and floating on water.
Some of the interior sunrooms were absolutely breathtaking, seemingly out of a palatial estate in South of France rather than a botanical garden. With flowers hanging from every corner and enrapturing spring fragrances filling the pavilion, I could have stayed there for days. It is certainly a dream of mine to one day have a garden like that in my backyard.
Strolling through the premises, I saw so many different types of orchids of all shapes and colors that I couldn’t stop snapping pictures. Orchids thrive in almost any environment, from deserts to rain forests, around the world, which explains its unbelievable variety.
I couldn’t point to one orchid in particular I liked most; I didn’t even know so many types exist. They were all splendid and so beautifully detailed.
The 11th Orchid Show features the most common orchid habitat: the tropical rain forest, which was my second favorite exhibit. It suddenly felt I’m in the Amazonas of Brazil, instead of Bronx, NY.
I also enjoyed the rock garden and the cactus expo. The Manolo Valdés Monumental Sculptures were also an unexpected touch for the gardens.
As a general rule, I would recommend a visit in late May, early summer, to make sure all the trees and flowers are fully bloomed. I am definitely coming back for the Rose Garden and possibly for Monet’s Garden if it will take place this year as well.
