Ever considered Bulgaria? High up on the travel radar, more and more eastern European destinations are attracting travelers looking for unique experiences. And as a Romanian, I owed it to myself to visit the neighbors.
As a sun-seeker’s holiday destination, Bulgaria has certainly grown in popularity over recent years – and it’s not hard to see why. Bordering the Black Sea, Bulgaria holidays promise plenty of watery fun for all ages, a hot summer climate and a number of bubbly beach resorts that make it a fantastic all-round holiday hotspot.
Traditionally known as a fairly affordable place to visit, Bulgaria continues to attract families and summer sun-seekers in their droves. It has plenty going on for all ages and for holiday-makers from all walks of life. Adventurers will love the water sports on offer on the Black Sea, not to mention the craggy mountain ranges and rocky gorges that adorn Bulgaria’s beautiful interior. City slickers can enjoy a quite different perspective in capital Sofia, enjoying a classic east-meets-west vibe with plenty of ancient sights, beautiful old buildings and a bustling modern nightlife.
As for beaches, Bulgaria really has a treat in store. Golden Sands is, as the name suggests, a cracking spot to lay your towel for the day, which comes complete with a number of beach-side bars and eateries. Nessebar is a modern and popular resort with a historic twist. Peer beyond the local amenities of this modern beach resort and discover ancient ruins dating back hundreds of years, along with a pretty town featuring looming old buildings and quaint cobbled streets.
There are plenty of lodging options, but if you’re going as a couple, then Melia Grand Hermitage is one of your best choices. It’s truly grandiose, with an accommodating pool and incredibly spacious rooms.
To soak up some more of the ‘traditional’ Bulgaria, try the mineral springs in St. Konstantin, or explore the magnificent Balkan Mountains. Stretching along the length of Bulgaria, it boasts plenty of hiking and biking trails as well as several long distance routes. As one of three National Parks in Bulgaria, it’s a beautiful spot that’s well worth exploring.
Whatever type of holiday you’re after, be it a summer beach break or an adventure-filled mountain biking trip, although Bulgaria is not your typical exotic destination, it’s definitely worth a visit.
