The Social Media Generation

We live in times of a highly social environment. We are all too honest about our daily activities, where we are, who we are with, displaying pictures, many pictures, proving our cool factor. We unmistakably show our best and everyone has to be made aware of it to feel good about ourselves. If we travel to a far away exotic place it implies a certain social status, if we post a certain link from The Economist or WSJ, we are smart and intellectual. It’s all about being subtle but captivating, addictive. Addictive is the word! We are competing for the best status/quote. Who went where and did what is the main interest. Sometimes we live through some else’s Facebook. We are either extremely happy, successful, envied or very depressed. Either way, many friends comment. We are brutally open or scary secretive, all with the purpose to seem more interesting than the other.  We are constantly striving for success, innovation, something to make us stand out. We are not easily satisfied; but full of greed, of wanting more and more, until it becomes difficult to find gratitude in anything. Those that expose their selves at an early age are the easiest target; it becomes dangerous and it plays with their mind.

Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. we are all on them. It’s like you’re not normal if you’re not. They used to be platforms for students mostly, now it’s for anyone and everyone. We spend too much time on it and we take it too seriously. It’s a new revolution. Recently, social media skills are highly appreciated when applying for certain jobs. Not just that but companies and celebrities make big money from it, and more and more people advertise on it. Oh and … people started naming their kids Facebook?!

We Like, Dislike, Follow, Comment, Join, attend events and support causes. If we would all be so friendly in real life or care that much, correct? It’s all about how many friends, how many likes and comments you get, how many followers, how many views and votes. If you don’t say a word, then you’re ignorant or boring.

Today I’m feeling a little weary and I’m wondering how much of it is really real?
