Why go cruising?

Every year, thousands, even millions of holiday-makers jet off on cruise trips to various parts of the world. Some are short, local affairs; others are long luxury cruises with multiple ports of call and endless onboard facilities.

Ever since I can remember, I thought cruises are boring and targeted to an older age range. Which is why I was never too eager in going on one. Being stuck on a boat all weeklong didn’t sounds too appealing. However, as an increasing number of cruise companies are boosting their offerings, more and more travelers are opting to go.

So why do so many people go cruising?

The answer, for many, lies in the cruise lifestyle. Today’s cruise vessels are vast floating hotels with every convenience and boredom-busting entertainment you could ever wish for. Some large-scale cruise operators like Royal Caribbean International offer fantastic family-friendly activities with sports facilities like rock climbing walls, basketball courts, ice-skating rinks, mini golf and even boxing rings. Other cruise ships, like the MSC Splendida, place the emphasis more on luxury cruising for adults, with plenty of swish Broadway-style entertainment, shopping centers, spa treatments and casinos.

Of course many people choose a cruise holiday first and foremost for its spectacular array of destinations. Just think – you could wake up to a new destination every morning and have the chance to spend the day in wonderful towns and cities, exploring all the main sights and picking up local souvenirs to take home. Or you might choose to spend your day relaxing on the beach, or taking an organized excursion for a direct route to the main must-sees.

There are thousands of different cruise holidays on offer throughout the year, across scores of different operators. One of the best ways to search them all and to find out which cruise suits your preferences – as well as your pocket – is to search via a tour operator. Take thomascook.com/cruise for instance. As one of the nation’s favorite tour operators, Thomas Cook knows how to deliver a great holiday – and although it doesn’t own any cruise ships it has a long list of cruises from all the major operators.

For this fall, I am taking the leap; I have booked a cruise down the Adriatic Coast passing through various coastal cities in Croatia, Montenegro and Italy. It will be a thrill to revisit magical Venice and to finally enjoy the pristine beaches of Croatia and Montenegro, countries that have jumped to the very top on the latest travel radar.

Save time by comparing the ships, itineraries, on-board facilities, prices and special offers in one place, and book online to secure your place on what could easily be your holiday of a lifetime…
